CHARLES GREEN SHAW 
1892 - 1974

 

 Born in New York City, Charles Shaw was described as a "wealthy man-about-town, poet and minor novelist" before he began to paint.  As a painter he became a significant figure in the history American abstract art. His work was noted for its clarity of form and architectural construction, most clearly, geometric-biomorphic abstraction. In the later part of his life, he turned to Abstract Expressionism.

American Abstract Painting Today; and in  Samuel Kootz, New Frontiers in American Painting.  Shaw's work has been covered by Hilton Kramer in and Art and Antiques article, Saluting Pioneer Abstractionists in March 2003 and also in April 1997Painter of Privilege; and by Avis Berman in Art & Auction October 1995, American Modernisms.
