Hunt Slonem 1951 —

Biography

HUNT SLONEM
Excerpts from an article written by Henry Geldzahler,
former Curator of Post World War II American Art, Metropolitan Museum of Art NY

The exoticism of Hunt Slonem's work sets him immediately apart from Contemporary American painters. Though his works do occasionally feature frogs, rabbits, ocelots and monkeys, it is his bird subject for which he is instantly recognizable. In the mode of the big bold exotic painters he admires, Malcolm Morley, Francesco Clemente and Roberto Juarez, Smith's works also convey a spiritual aura.

The myriad of birds and the numbers of species scrutinized by Slonem is astounding. In human terms, they can be seen as fashion victims, dressed and segregated by a slightly ‘mad' couturier with one very good idea---but all the same; repetition with a variety echoes on Hunt's canvases.

Slonem is a painter, a painter's painter with an enormous bag of technical tricks which become apparent to the viewer the longer he stands before the work. So, in Hunt, there is a serious side to painting. By varying the moods and techniques of his work, in fresh and exciting ways, Hunt Slonem creates beautiful work that continually gives joy and surprise.

Excerpt from HUNT SLONEM by Henry Geldzahler 1985
